Second Life

Second Life is a 3D software program that was developed in 2003 that has gained a lot of popularity nowadays. The software helps people to design three dimensional objects or avatars which can interact with other avatars.

Second Life
Each person who becomes a part of this program needs to choose one avatar of his/her own choice and thereby interact, socialize, talk to other residents and be a part of any ongoing activity.

The Second Life site is not only meant for social networking but can also be used as an effective tool in educating students, providing them knowledge about art, working solutions, science and research. Thousands of universities all over UK and US have started using Second Life to interact and teach their students which speaks a lot about the quality of the software.

Second life has recently been distributed to universities all over the world to carry out teaching because it is much easier to reach the students via this 3D virtual world then via classroom teaching. Not only this, we find institutes that make use of Second life exclusively and have students all over the globe.

Linden Lab was the company that brought out this product on June 23rd, 2003 and as years have gone by the members have increased currently measuring at 18 million. Second Life can be used by anyone who is above the age of 18 and for the teenagers there is Teen Second Life. The site is totally free of cost for a person having a single account. However a person having multiple accounts may need to take out a paid premium membership.

This can not only be used for social interaction and college education but it can also be used as a platform for enhancing one's business skills and knowledge. People who seek to learn a particular language can be benefited by usage of this virtual world. Second Life also boosts the creativity of a person by usage of the 3D software which is rarely found on any other application.

Second Life has also benefited various religions to get in touch with their followers and help them conduct discussions. Art and science are the 2 other fields which have profited from Second Life because people now have more knowledge about from interacting with other experts and therefore are more educated and informed.

Each of the Second Life users can choose an avatar which maybe of any form depending on the choice of the user. The avatars maybe of the form of humans, animals, or for that matter any other non living thing like grains of wheat or rice.

A user can have only one avatar at a time which can however be changed when one wishes to do so. Second Life also facilitates its members to have a 3D chat which is usually between 2 avatars and can be viewed by an avatar in close proximity. Thus we see that with the kind of features Second Life has, it is bound to gain popularity in the years to come especially in the field of education.
